Cutting off electricity to an entire population as a way to pressure a militant group is just collective punishment, and that’s not something any freedom-loving person should support. The people of Gaza aren’t responsible for Hamas’ actions, yet they’re the ones suffering the most here. Israel has the right to defend itself, but that doesn’t mean it should violate basic human rights in the process. Government power—whether it’s Israel’s or Hamas’—always ends up hurting innocent people the most.

Israel has every right to take these measures—Hamas is holding innocent hostages, and they need to face real consequences until they’re released. If Hamas actually cared about the people in Gaza, they’d surrender instead of using them as human shields.
